PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To securely mesh gears between a starter motor and a crank shaft when starting an engine to reduce collision sound and prevent a baffle member adjusting a phase of an idle gear from colliding against the idle gear after starting the engine. SOLUTION: This engine starter is provided with a ring gear 5, a starter motor 11 having a pinion 16, the idle gear 17 meshing with the pinion 16 and driven by the starter motor 11, a solenoid 12 moving the idle gear 17 from a stand-by position to a meshing position in the radial direction for the ring gear 5 while the idle gear 17 is meshed with the pinion 16, and a phase adjusting mechanism 7 adjusting a phase of the idle gear 17 while the idle gear 17 moves from the stand-by position to the meshing position. The phase adjusting mechanism 7 has the baffle member 72 interfering with teeth of the idle gear 17 and a baffle member position control mechanism for moving the baffle member 72 between an interference position and an evacuation position.
