PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an austenitic stainless steel improved in stress corrosion cracking resistance and crevice corrosion resistance in an environment in which wet and dry conditions are repeated under salt and suitable for an automotive underfloor member. SOLUTION: The austenitic stainless steel for automotive members comprises, by mass,≤0.05% C.≤3.0% Si,≤1.8% Mn,≤0.045% P,≤0.005% S, 6-20% Ni, 16-25% Cr, 0.5 to <1.5% Cu,≤0.05% N, 0.3-2.%% Mo and the balance Fe with inevitable impurities or further contains one or more selected from <0.2% Al,≤0.2% Nb,≤0.2% Ti and≤0.005% B if necessary and satisfies Si/Cu≥0.8.
