A presence information managing method for managing presence information of users having e-mail addresses by using an associated terminal address/presence information table in which the terminal addresses of terminals are associated with the presence information including the positional information of those terminals and with which the thus associated terminal addresses and presence information are registered in advance, and further using an associated e-mail address/terminal address table in which e-mail addresses are associated with the terminal addresses and with which the thus associated e-mail addresses and terminal addresses are registered, wherein the e-mail address of a user and the presence information of a terminal is extracted from an e-mail reception request; the extracted e-mail address is used to search the associated e-mail address/terminal address table; and wherein when the retrieved terminal address is not coincident with the extracted terminal address, the extracted terminal address is registered with the associated e-mail address/terminal address table, thereby automatically updating the user presence information during the e-mail reception request.
