In a passenger vehicle, e.g. a city bus, the operation of opening the door is controlled from the change-speed-gear lever. The parking brake may also be operated from the change-speed-gear lever. As shown in Fig. 1, the gear lever gate 3 has the positions 1, 2, 3, 4 for forward gears and the positions D and R, the latter being for reverse gear, the gears being pneumatically controlled as described in Specification 740,459. The door is normally held closed by a pneumatic motor 10, the differential piston 13 of which is held in the left hand (closed) position by pressure from a reservoir 5 through pipe 14. When the gear lever is moved to the position D, the pneumatic pressure from reservoir 5 is admitted to the left hand side of the piston 13 through pipe 6 and the door is opened. A manually operated valve for isolating the motor allows the doors to be opened manually. The parking brake may be actuated through a rod 18 and handbrake lever 19, or through pneumatic motor 20 and link 17, air being admitted to the motor through pipe 15 when the lever is in position D. The brake actuation may be alternative or in addition to the door control. According to Fig. 2, the gear changes are selected by electrical means and the door control mechanism is also electric, being included in the circuit between earth, the leads 25, 26 and the battery 24. As shown, the door is held in the closed position. When moved to the position D, the gear lever closes a contact 22 exciting a relay 23 which interrupts a contact 27 and closes a contact 28 thereby connecting lead 26 to the battery 24 to open the door. Alternatively or in addition, closing of the contact 28 may energize a relay 31 to operate a valve 29 by which air under pressure may be supplied to a pneumatic brake operating motor 20. When the gears are pneumatically operated and the door electrically controlled, movement of the gear lever to the position D admits air under pressure to a motor 33 which actuates a switch 34 in the door control mechanism. Mechanism responding to a gear lever is disposed upon the steering column and alternative forms of valves in the pneumatic circuits are described. |
