PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid coater and an ink jet recording apparatus that can supply a liquid to a liquid chamber with reduced power consumption and noise. SOLUTION: A coating liquid is filled into a liquid holding space S by driving a pump 3007 (step S201). Upon the completion of filling, the pump 3007 is stopped (step S203). Next, a coating liquid is applied onto a transferred coating medium (steps S205 to S207). At this time, a count is added to a RAM4003. From counts stored in the RAM4003 and the prescribed number of times of coating stored in ROM4002, a judgment is then made on whether or not coating is possible (step S208). When the result of the judgment is that the coating is impossible, the step is transferred to a step S201 to conduct filling of a coating liquid.
