In a rolling mill provided with replaceable roll-stands W, Fig. 11, and having an automatic clutch between each roll Wz and its driving shaft Sp, the shaft bearing St is secured to the bed-plate S during removal of one stand W and until another such stand is in complete engagement and the freshlyinserted stand and the shaft bearing St are connected together for unitary movement, the shaft bearing St then being released from the bed-plate S. The roll stand W is removed and the fresh stand inserted by a pistonrod 16 acting on the stand through a quick - action clutch 17 and passing through the base F of the shaft bearing St. As the movement of the stand and shaft bearing proceeds to the left clamping bolts 1, Fig. 4, register with grooves 3 in the bed-plate S and under the pressure of springs 2 the bolts 1 are gradually forced into the grooves 3 until grooves 5, Fig. 5, in the bolts 1 register with projections 8 on locking bolts 6. The bolts 6 are biased towards the grooves 5 by springs 9 bearing on members 15 and when the projections 8 enter the grooves 5 catches 6a, Fig. 6, formed on the ends of the bolts 6 disengage from a keyway 7 formed in the piston-rod 16. The piston-rod 16 thus continues its movement and carries the stand W to the left to automatically disengage the driving-shaft clutches while the driving shaft bearing St is held stationary. The movement of the piston-rod controls the withdrawal of the catches 6a through an attached stopplate and wedge-shaped members 11 which bear on pins 10 attached to the bolts 6 and control the entry of the bolts into the grooves 5. On the return movement to engage a fresh stand the stop-plate engages bolts 12 attached to the members 11 and initiate the re-engagement of the catches 6a against the springs 9. Continued movement then disengages the bolts 1 from the grooves 3 by wedge-action of the groove against the springs 2. It is stated that the interconnection between the shaft bearing lock and the unitary locking of the stand and shaft bearing may be controlled hydraulically or electrically.
