<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus using a cleaning means having a brush roller, achieving appropriate cleaning performance in accordance with the adhesive amount of toner remaining on an intermediate transfer body and always satisfactorily realizing the removal of the toner remaining on the intermediate transfer body. <P>SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus is equipped with: a means for detecting the image density of the toner image remaining on the intermediate transfer body by secondarily transferring an intermediate toner image formed by successively primarily transferring a plurality of different color toner images formed electrostatically to the intermediate transfer body to transfer material; and the cleaning means for removing the toner remaining on the intermediate transfer body. The cleaning means has a conductive counter roller and a conductive brush roller pressed against the conductive counter roller through the intermediate transfer body. Cleaning voltage having a reverse polarity to the toner is applied to the conductive brush roller, and a cleaning condition for the cleaning means is changed based on the value of a primary transfer current and an output value from the means for detecting the image density. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI |
