<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vehicle inquiry system for efficiently detecting a stolen vehicle or a wanted vehicle or the like or the control of the owner of a vehicle who repeatedly viorates traffic regulations such as the violation of parking or stopping, and for increasing information relating to any suspicious vehicles to be provided by the general public. <P>SOLUTION: The image of a suspicious vehicle is picked up by a portable telephone 2 so that the inquiry for any suspicious vehicles is requested from the portable telephone 2 to a center device 1. The center device 1 processes the image of a license plate section transmitted with the inquiry request of a vehicle from the portable telephone 2, and recognizes the license plate number of the vehicle, and performs inquiry processing for retrieving a database.
