PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a portable reproducing device and its operation method which have an enhanced reproducing period of time and can shorten the period of time for cold boot. SOLUTION: This reproducing device includes: a control unit, a RAM controlled by the control unit; an HDD for storing data information controlled by the control unit and reproduced; and a flash memory equipped with a buffer area, controlled by the control unit, for storing a part of the data information for the HDD. In a normal operation mode, the data information stored in a buffer area is loaded onto the RAM on a certain unit basis. In shifting from a slip mode to a power down mode, the instant reproducing information stored in the RAM is stored onto the flash memory with the flag information indicating if the data stored in the buffer area is valid. In the cold boot operation, the instant reproducing information stored in the flash memory is loaded onto the RAM so that the instant reproducing operation is performed without spin up of a hard disk drive.
