PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for simply detecting a gene, without requiring complicated operations, such as amplification of a nucleic acid and labeling of the nucleic acid. SOLUTION: This method comprises adding two of different polynucleotides hybridizable with a target polynucleotide to a sample, and then irradiating the sample with light, wherein a first of the polynucleotides is combined with a photosensitized reducing agent and a second of the polynucleotides is combined with an electron acceptor-functional molecule complex so as to be dissociative. Therefore, the complex isolates the functional molecule by accepting an electron which is released from the photosensitized reducing agent based on irradiation with the light, so that a function of the functional molecule is developed.
