A self contained release system for a fire door has a housing incorporating a permanent magnetic grip to hold the door in the open setting. An integral smoke detector activates an electromagnet which slides the permanent magnet into a release setting and thereby frees the door. The smoke detector and release electromagnet are battery powered.
