<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus capable of easily upgrading a monochromatic image forming apparatus to a color image forming apparatus and capable of being downsized. <P>SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus is provided with: a monochromatic unit 1 including a monochromatic imaging engine 2 for directly transferring and forming a monochromatic image on a recording material; a color unit 3 detachably installed in the monochromatic unit 1 and including one or more color imaging engines 4 (4a-4c) for directly transferring a color image other than the monochromatic image on the recording material; and a recording material feeding unit 5 detachably installed in the monochromatic unit 1 or the color unit 3 to feed the recording material. The color unit 3 has a carrying means 7 for carrying the recording material in an approximately vertical direction so as to directly transfer images, and the carrying means 7 is provided with a receiving part 8 and a transfer part 9 which can receive/transfer the recording material to/from an adjacent unit. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI |
