PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical element or the like improving adhesion strength of a liquid crystal layer substantially without degradation of optical characteristics (deterioration of transparency, cloudiness or display irregularity or the like).

SOLUTION: The optical element comprises a transparent substrate, an alignment layer, and the liquid crystal layer formed on a transparent base material through the alignment layer. The liquid layer contains an adhesion improving agent. A retardation plate comprises the optical element. An optical laminate comprises the optical element and a polarization plate. A display device arranges the retardation plate or the optical laminate.
