PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for manufacturing an optical fiber base material which is less prone to generate bubbles and white turbidity in the interface of a glass rod and a glass fine particle deposited layer. SOLUTION: The optical fiber base material is manufactured by a method wherein a glass raw material is supplied into a burner, to form glass fine particles by a flame hydrolysis reaction, and a plurality of the deposited layers of the glass fine particles are deposited on the outer peripheral surface of the glass rod by reciprocating the burner to the axial direction of the glass rod, and wherein the first layer of the glass fine particles is heated after the first layer is deposited on the outer periphery of the glass rod.
