PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To manufacture a sintered material such as high quality artificial aggregate with an inexpensive apparatus, low fuel consumption and low manufacturing cost. SOLUTION: In the manufacture of the sintered material requiring fixed strength by firing a granulated material containing a material volatile or combustible in firing and having a certain particle distribution, the granulated material is separated into a large diameter one and a small diameter one which are fired individually. The artificial aggregate has≥1.50 g/cm<SP>3</SP>and≤2.10 g/cm<SP>3</SP>absolute dry density,≥0.1 mass% and≤6 mass% water absorption for 24 hr and≥0.5 kN crushing strength of the aggregate having≥5 mm to <10 mm diameter or≥1.0 kN crushing strength of the aggregate having≥10 mm to <15 mm diameter and in the manufacture of the artificial aggregate by adding a binder or a caking additive to the coal ash to make the granulated materials and firing the granulated materials in a rotary kiln, the granulated material is separated into two one of which has a diameter adjusted to≥5 mm and <10 mm and another one of which has a diameter adjusted to≥10 mm and <15 mm and fired individually in the rotary kiln.
