PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a gradation number conversion processing apparatus for revising the gradation number of a received gradation image, and outputting the result that carries out the gradation conversion processing adaptive to the input image. SOLUTION: A characteristic extractor 1 extracts a prescribed characteristic as a feature of a gradation image; a first storage 2 stores a first dither matrix; a second storage 3 stores a second dither matrix whose degree of dispersion differs from that of the first dither matrix; a dither matrix switch 4 selects either of the first and second dither matrices depending on the gradation value of input pixels; and a gradation number converter 5 compares the dither matrix selected by the dither matrix switch with the gradation value of the input pixels, and outputs a pixel sequence with a different gradation number.
