PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the "black float (grayish black)" problem caused by a contrast decrease, by reducing the effect of flare light in the time of black display in an image display device such as a projector. SOLUTION: The image display device includes: a light source 1, a liquefied micro-lens array 2, a liquid crystal panel 3, and a controller 6 that synchronizes pixel modulation timing of the liquid crystal panel and refracting power change timing of the liquefied micro-lens array. Each of the liquefied micro-lenses 2a of the liquefied micro-lens array 2 is set so as to correspond to each of the pixels 3a of the liquid crystal panel 3. Part of contrast control of each pixel 3a of the liquid crystal panel 3 is carried out by refracting power control using the bias control of the liquefied micro lens 2a. Thus, by juxtaposing the liquefied micro-lens array with the liquid crystal panel and changing refracting force of each liquefied micro-lens when displaying black, the amount of leak light (flare light) entering an area effective to display pixels is reduced.
