PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a wire electric discharge machine and an automatic wire connecting method, confirming whether or not a wire electrode is normally loaded at the time of automatic wire connection of the wire electrode to prevent a fault due to abnormal loading of the wire electrode. SOLUTION: In this wire electric discharge machine having a device for automatically connecting the wires of the wire electrode, an encoder 12 is fitted to a rotating shaft of a delivery roller 9, a powder clutch 13 is provided between the delivery roller 9 and a delivery motor 15, and the transmission torque of the powder clutch 13 is made variable. In order to apply a predetermined tension to the wire electrode 1, the transmission torque value of the powder clutch 13 is preset and stored, and after the wire electrode loading operation, the wire electrode is pulled up by a predetermined length to thereby confirm whether or not the wire electrode is normally loaded.
