PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a toroidal type continuous variable transmission improving power transmission efficiency of a transmission and extending lifetime of a retainer by reducing loss due to friction between the retainer, a roller, a power roller and an outer ring of a thrust rolling bearing. SOLUTION: In this invented toroidal type continuously variable transmission, surface treatment for reducing friction is applied on contact parts X, Y of a surface of the retainer 14 of the thrust ball bearing contacting at least one of a ball 13, the power roller and the outer ring.
