An apparatus for conducting an optical signal comprises a plurality of optically conductive blocks, each block being arranged to cooperate with another to define a pathway for the optical signal in at least two dimensions. A matrix of such blocks may be constructed to create a plurality of one-, two- or three-dimensional pathways therein for the conduction of a plurality of optical signals.
