PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To find an active ingredient as a new antimalarial medicine and clarify its action mechanism. SOLUTION: Gliotoxin which is an antibiotic substance which fungal Aspergillus produces is used as an active ingredient for the antimalarial medicine. The antimalarial medicine contains gliotoxin as an active ingredient. Specifically, proteasome activity of Plasmodium spp. is inhibited by gliotoxin to exhibit antimalarial effect. Further, e.g. the gliotoxin is made to act as an active ingredient of antimalarial medicine against chloroquine-sensitive or resistant Plasmodium spp. When the gliotoxin is used, the concentration free from cytotoxicity can be selected.
