PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To achieve optional epitaxial crystal growth of an intermediate layer and a magnetic recording layer by preventing crystallization of a backing layer thereby flattening the surface thereof regarding a perpendicular magnetic recording medium and manufacturing method therefor. SOLUTION: The perpendicular magnetic recording medium is characterized in that a non-magnetic intermediate layer 2 is provided between the backing layer 1 composed of an amorphous or precipitation type microcrystalline soft magnetic film and the magnetic recording layer 3.
