A communication system and a mobile communication terminal which are capable of receiving assignment of a high transmission rate upstream SCH (Supplement Channel). The mobile communication terminal requests assignment of an upstream SCH (step S 11 b), receives the transmission rate of the assigned SCH (step S 11 c), and if this transmission rate is not acceptable (namely, "unacceptable" in step S 11 d), then it requests release of the assigned SCH (step S 11 h) and again requests assignment of an upstream SCH (step S 11 i).
