<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recording device which corrects errors of a sensor by a simple constitution, and can more accurately record an image on a recording medium such as a CD, and to provide a position correcting method for the recording device. <P>SOLUTION: In this recording device, a recording head and an optical sensor are loaded on a carriage which reciprocates in a specified direction, the position of the recording medium is specified by the optical sensor, and recording can be performed on the recording medium by the recording head. In the recording device, a recording pattern is test-recorded on the recording medium by scanning the carriage while detecting the position of the carriage regarding the specified direction. The recording pattern test-recorded is read by the optical sensor by moving the carriage for scanning. Then, a distance between the recording head and the optical sensor is obtained from a first carriage position which is detected when the recording pattern is test-recorded, and a second carriage position which is detected when the recording pattern is read.
