PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a general method for aromatizing a ring constructed in the form of a chain. SOLUTION: The method for producing acenes is carried out as follows. A diene represented by formula (2) (wherein, R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>2</SP>, A<SP>1</SP>, A<SP>2</SP>, A<SP>3</SP>, A<SP>4</SP>, A<SP>5</SP>and A<SP>6</SP>are each the same or different and represent each a hydrocarbon group or the like; and l, m and n represent each independently an integer of 0-10, with the proviso that n and l are not simultaneously 0) is reacted with a Lewis acid.
