PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress excess motion of a cutter caused by inertial force and excess motion when a cloth feeder is reversely rotated by a simple and inexpensive structure in a sewing machine to cut cloth by driving a cutter simultaneously with sewing. SOLUTION: This sewing machine with a cutter is equipped with a cutter driving motor 31 to drive the cutter as a cutter driving device disposed independent of a sewing machine driving device to drive a sewing part of the sewing machine, a transmission mechanism 32 to convert rotating motion of the cutter driving motor 31 to oscillating motion and transmit the motion to the cutter, a driving rod 33 with one end side connected to the cutter driving motor 31 to constitute the transmission mechanism 32, elastic members 47, 70, 47D in which one end sides are supported by the driving rod 33 and energizing the driving rod 33 to the cutter driving motor 31 side and action force to act so that a phase of the transmission mechanism 32 is returned to a prescribed position is set larger than torque of the cutter driving motor 31 at non-power-applied time and smaller than torque at power-applied time of the cutter driving motor 31, and a stopping and braking means to stop or brake the motion of the cutter.
