摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for efficiently and stably manufacturing a polyphenylene ether having a number-average molecular weight of 4,000-15,000 while suppressing scale deposition on a reactor or lowering of the yield, and a method for efficiently manufacturing many kinds of polyphenylene ethers having a different number-average molecular weight. SOLUTION: The manufacturing method of the polyphenylene ether having a number-average molecular weight of 4,000-15,000 comprises polymerizing a phenolic compound in the presence of a catalyst and an oxygen-containing gas using a polymerization solvent containing at least 95 wt% of a poor solvent to obtain a polymerization solution where the polyphenylene ether having a number-average molecular weight of 1,000-5,000 has separated out, subsequently adding a good solvent to the polymerization solution in such an amount that the content of the poor solvent lowers down to less than 95 wt% and continuing the polymerization.
