PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a position shift correcting method and a color image forming apparatus that can correct a read error (detection difference) when a pattern for position shifting is read and form an image free of position shifts of respective colors. SOLUTION: The color image forming apparatus having an image carrier, a plurality of image forming means of forming a multicolor image on the image carrier, detecting means of detecting position shifts of the respective colors formed on the image carrier with the patter for position shift detection, and a correcting means of correcting the position shifts of the respective colors has a control means of performing control for correcting the position shifts by feeding a correction quantity, corresponding to a detection difference between a detection result of a pattern for position shift detection formed with a black toner by the detecting means 17, 18, and 19 and a detection result of a pattern for position shift detection formed with color toners, back to the correcting means 11 when the detection difference is generated.
