PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a novel alumina-titania complex oxide crystal material which has a high activity, a surface hydrophilicity in the dark and an organic polymer substrate-protecting property under exposure to light, which have been difficult to achieve in conventional photocatalysts, a microcrystal composite material thereof, and a method for manufacturing the same at a low temperature. SOLUTION: The alumina-titania complex oxide crystal material has a ratio of aluminum atoms to titanium atoms of 0.8-1.2. The composite material is obtained by dispersing the alumina-titania complex oxide crystal material in an amorphous matrix. The complex oxide crystal material and the composite material can be synthesized at a low temperature by using an aluminum-titanium complex oxide gel derived from a metal alkoxide etc. as a precursor and applying a mechanical energy such as grinding and shock to this using a planetary ball mill etc. COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI
