The method involves forming a pre-joint for positioning and fixing a firing channel (2) at an air bag cover (1). The channel and the cover contact each other within a ring-shaped joint region enclosing a predetermined breaking line by a force-fit/form-fit connection of the pre-joint. A firmly bonded connection is formed between the joint surfaces of the pre-joint by laser welding, where the welding pressure is provided by the pre-joint. An independent claim is also included for an assembly including an air bag cover with an integrated predetermined breaking line and a firing channel.
