The method involves determining four acceleration signals by sensors (4-6) in two perpendicular directions of a motor vehicle. Two of four acceleration signals determined in different directions are linked to form a link signal, and the other two acceleration signals are linked to form another link signal by an evaluation unit. A vehicle roll over is determined when the processed link signals exceed a threshold value. An independent claim is also included for a device for detecting roll over of a motor vehicle.
