A battery separator comprises a base sheet of acid-resistant microporous material bearing at least one rib consisting of a blend of fused, homogeneous thermoplastic plastisol and a cured, thermosetting resin having a porous particulate filler distributed throughout. The base sheet may be resin-impregnated paper or cotton linters, the resin preferably being a phenolic resin, microporous rubber or a thermoplastic material. The base sheet may either be flat or have embossed or otherwise formed ribs. The plastisol consists of a thermoplastic resin e.g. P.V.C. or copolymer of vinyl chloride and vinyl acetate, vinylidene chloride, or diethyl maleate dispersed or suspended in a suitable plasticizer. The thermosetting resin may be a phenolformaldehyde resin or an unsaturated polyester resin containing a co-polymerizable ethylenically unsaturated monomer. The polyester may be prepared from one or more of the following acids: maleic, fumaric, aconitic, mesaconic, citraconic, ethylmaleic, pyrocinchonic, veronic, itaconic- (with or without adipic, succinic, sebacic, phthalic, linolenic, linoleic or elaeosteric acids) and one or more of the following glycols: ethylene, di-, tri-, and poly-ethylene, 1,3-propylene, 1,2-propylene, dipropylene (1,3 or 1,2), butylene or styrene glycol. specified monomers copolymerizable with unsaturated polyesters are styrene, vinyl toluene, methyl methacrylate, vinyl acetate, diallyl phthalate and triallyl cyanurate. Porous particualte fillers may be hydrous silica gel, bentonite, or terra alba. When the base sheet has formed embossed ribs, the blend is applied to the tops of the formed ribs.
