The invention relates to a method for ante mortem diagnosis of a transmissible spongiform encephalopathy (TSE) disease in a mammal comprising the incubation of a sample of a body fluid taken from the mammal with substances being specific to a surrogate marker of TSE, the detection of the specific incubation products, the determination of the surrogate marker concentration and based on it the diagnosis of TSE, wherein the diagnosis of TSE is performed on a mammal showing no symptoms of TSE, wherein the body fluid which is taken from the mammal is selected from the group consisting of blood, serum, plasma, saliva, and urine, and wherein substances being specific to CXCL13 are used for diagnosis of TSE. Object of the invention is also a method for ante mortem differential diagnosis of a TSE disease, and the use of substances being specific to CXCL13 in these methods.
