The method involves adjusting a parameter so that a condition variable (rl) of a combustion chamber (12) assigned to an inlet valve (14) does not change when another parameter is switched on. The condition variable includes a fresh air charge and a combustion centroid. The parameters includes opening angle, closing angle, valve stroke curves (H1, H2) and phase position (pn) of curves.
