An image interpolation apparatus which generates a single frame of image data from a plurality of frames of image data consecutively input in time-series order, comprises an index value computing section (15) which calculates an index value for a specific direction from at least one group of pixel data arranged in the specific direction in the vicinity of the pixel position in said plurality of frames of image data corresponding to the pixel position of the single frame of image data, a direction decision section (16) which detects a direction in which there is a strong correlation in the pixel position on the basis of the index value calculated at the index value computing section (15), a switching section (17) which selects operation data to be used from said plurality of frames of image data on the basis of the direction detected by the direction decision section (16) and switching operation data, and an interpolation section (18) which determines pixel data in the pixel position using the operation data switched by the switching section (17).
