PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable the decomposition of methyl formate under mild conditions and to efficiently produce high purity carbon monoxide without requiring any gas purification process by decomposing methyl formate in the presence of a strongly basic anion-exchange resin in the production. SOLUTION: In this production, carbon monoxide is produced by decomposing methyl formate in the presence of a catalyst consisting of a strongly basic anion-exchange resin. As the strongly basic anion-exchange resin, an anion- exchange resin which contains ion-exchange groups that are quaternary ammonium groups each having a tri-substituted nitrogen atom by alkyl groups or a dialkylethanolamine cation and the base material of which is a styrene- divinylbenzene based cross-linked polystyrene or the like, is preferred. Also, this decomposition is preferably performed by using one of alcohols such as methanol or ethanol as a solvent and the adequate ratio by weight of methyl formate to the alcohol solvent is 1:0 to 1:10. Further, the reaction temp. within the range of 0 to 150 deg.C is appropriate. |
