A buckle for vehicle seat safety belts comprises a flat fastening member 3 and a cooperating channel-shaped fastening member 1, each attachable to a belt section, the channelshaped member being adapted to receive the flat member 3 and being provided with a release handle 12 which carries means for releasably retaining the flat member engaged in the channel-shaped member, the handle being pivoted at one of its ends on a shaft 11 carried between the side walls of the channel, the handle member being adapted to be swung away from the open-sides of the channel against the influence of spring loading acting on both the handle and the retaining means to a position permitting the first member to be released, the retaining means comprising a number of latching pawls 16 pivotally mounted on the shaft 11 and adapted to engage in apertures 31 in the flat member under the influence of the spring loading when the handle is in retaining position and are moved out of engagement with the apertures when the release handle is swung away from the channel into the releasing position against the influence of the spring loading. A pin 22 interconnects the pawls 16 which as shown are four in number. The spring-loading for both the pawls and the handle member is a single spring which has two coiled sections 25 interconnected by a loop 26 the outer end portions 28 of the spring being substantially straight. The spring surrounds the pin 22 and the end portions 28 engage the handle member and the loop 26 engages underneath a shoulder 27 of a member 17 which surrounds the shaft 11 and has a slot 24 to permit movement of the pin 22, the ends of which are connected to the handle. The member 17 has a tongue and slot connection with the channel shaped member and so cannot move when the handle is moved. One end section of the belt passes round a member 10 which is slidably mounted by means of a pin 9 in an opening of the channel-shaped member so that the end of the belt section is gripped between the member 10 and an edge of the opening.
