[Also in Group XVII] A machine for coiling thread comprises in one form, Figs. 1, 3 and 4, a rotary spindle 12 through which the thread 6 passes to a guide 7 carried by a bell 10 mounted on the spindle, a pair of oppositely-threaded members 4a, 4b carried by spindles 21, 22, rotatable in a housing 18 journalled on the spindle 12, and a cylindrical container 3 carried by a rotary shaft 3a and fitted with a slidable bottom plate 5 urged upwardly by a spring 5c. The shaft 3a is slidable vertically by the operator and is located in its upper and lower positions by the engagement of a pawl (not shown) in a groove 3d or 3c. In its upper position, the mouth of the container embraces a fixed cover-plate 14 formed with an opening 15 through which the ends of the members 4a, 4b project. The spindles 21, 22 and 12 are interconnected by gears 23-26 and the housing 18 is prevented from rotating by rollers 8, Fig. 3, engaging the members 4a, 4b so that, as the spindle 12 rotates, the guide 7 lays the thread in the uppermost grooves of the members 4a, 4b and the latter are rotated in opposite directions to convey the coils thus formed downwardly towards the surface of the plate 5. The lower ends of the members are formed with inclined surfaces 29 so that each coil is finally deposited on the surface of the plate 5, the latter moving downwardly against the action of the spring 5c as successive coils are deposited thereon to form a stack of coils overlapping in spiral formation. The coils'are retained on the members 4a, 4b by a rubber roller 9, Fig. 3, co-operating with a leaf-spring 17. When the container 3 is full, it is lowered to enable the stack of coils to be ejected into a packaging container. In modifications (not shown) four or six conveying members are provided, alternate members having threads of opposite hand and rotating in opposite directions. In a second form, Fig. 8, the members 4a, 4b are replaced by three endless conveyer bands 48 formed with transverse grooves which receive the coils of thread. The bands pass over pairs of rollers 54 and similar rollers driven through worm gearing from the spindle 46 corresponding to the spindle 12. A fixed plate 56 has an upwardlybent end 55 which passes between one pair of rollers positioned slightly lower than the others and serves to deposit the coils in succession on the plate 5. |
