An image display unit comprising a rear plate having many electron emission elements, and a face plate respectively having phosphor layer patterns and light absorbing layer (black matrix) patterns on the inner surface of a translucent panel and disposed to face the rear plate, wherein each pattern unit in the phosphor layer has a polygonal shape formed by removing corners from a quadrangle concentric with a light emitting portion emitting light by electron beams from electron emission elements. The area of each pattern in the phosphor layer can be set to be 1.5-4.0 times the area of the light emitting portion. Accordingly, a high-contrast, high-grade display free from luminance lowering is possible.
