An out-springing retaining ring 6 includes a gap 16 in its circumference, the gap 16 being selected to have a size which, in the unstressed state of the ring 6, lies between the gap existing when the ring is in a working position (e.g. 12 in Fig. 3) and the size of the extended gap 15 required to assemble the ring into the working position.
