A hand-held electronic device with a keyboard optimized for use with the thumbs is provided. The handheld device includes a keyboard, a display, and a processo r. The keyboard is horizontally positioned symmetrically between a left edge and a right edge o f a face of the hand- held messaging device. The keyboard has a plurality of keys arranged in a plurality of rows across the face, wherein each row of keys is arranged in a concave pattern. The display is vertically positioned between the keyboard and a top edge of the face and is horizontally positioned symmetrically between the left edge and the right edge of the fac e. The processor is coupled to the keyboard and the display, and controls the operation of the hand-held messaging device.
