A rotatable facing head 20 comprises a tool-slide 24 movable diametrically across the head, a counterbalance slide 26, and interconnected drive means for moving the slides in opposite directions so that when rotating the head is dynamically balanced. The facing head is attached to the spindle of a headstock 12 which is movable on a vertical column 13. A boring-bar 27 or a facing cutter is mounted on the tool-slide 24, and a further boring-bar (not shown) in the headstock-spindle may be extended through openings in the facing head and in slides 24, 26. The slides are of channel form, slide 26 telescoping within the tool-slide 24 which is retained on the head 20 by guides 30, 32, 46, 48. Guide rails 134, 136 support the slide 26. Stops 138 on the head coact with abutments, Fig. 2 (not shown), on slide 26 to limit its travel. Tapered gibs 58, 139 prevent play in the slides. Toothed racks 86, 87 on the slides engage worm gears 84 driven in opposite directions when a reaction ring-gear 100 is stopped by a lever-operated screw-clamp 104 on the headstock. The drive between ring- gear 100 and the worms comprises a nine-speed transmission, Fig. 5 (not shown), including a reverse gear, a back gear and an overload clutch. Selection of the gears is by clutches operated manually by a handle mounted on the transmission housing 80. Weights 142 to balance the boring-bar 27 are included in the ends of the slide 26. The tool-slide 24 and slide 26 may be of different weights and moved unequal distances to maintain dynamic balance. |
