PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a birefringent wavelength body having high durability and high reliability.

SOLUTION: The birefringent wavelength body 1 comprises a main material 2 principally comprising glass and a plurality of light transparent sub-materials 3 which are dispersedly incorporated into the main material 2. The sub-materials 3 are formed in an elongated shape and are oriented such that the longitudinal directions are directed substantially in the same direction.
