<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To appropriately control heat quantity applied to a recording material with a toner image transferred thereto in a fixing process by accurately measuring surface temperature of the recording material. <P>SOLUTION: A fixing device fixing the toner image melted at a prescribed temperature to the recording material is provided with: a storing means stored with data for each type of the recording material indicating the correlation between the characteristic of infrared light radiated from the recording material and its surface temperature; a reading means specifying the type of the recording material and reading the corresponding characteristic data from the storing means; a heating means heating the transported recording material and fixing the toner image; a detecting means detecting the infrared light radiated from the heated recording material; a temperature specifying means converting the characteristic of the infrared light to temperature according the read characteristic data and specifying the surface temperature of the heated recording material; and a control means calculating the heat quantity to be applied to the recording material which is transported next from the difference between the surface temperature and the above prescribed temperature and then controlling the heat quantity of the heating means according to the calculated result. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI |
