PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To automatically decide the distribution of transmission in an LCD light attenuating filter corresponding to a light volume of an object so as to obtain a photoed image of higher quality in photographing the object of low to medium brightness. SOLUTION: The light attenuating filter 8 is provided on an optical path 2 between a lens optical system 3 and an image sensing element 1 for photographing the object so as to reduce a light volume reaching the image sensing element 1 corresponding to its region. Provided that the volume of light incident to each region of the light attenuating filter 1 and the transmission of the each region are represented by L and a function T(L) as a function of L, respectively, an LCD control circuit 9 controls the light attenuating filter 8 so as to make the function T(L) reach the maximum when L is kept smaller than a prescribed value of L0 and to make the function T(L) decrease monotonously with an increase of L.
