Barium oxide compositions are produced by heating particulate barium oxide (preferably 5 to 65 mesh in size U.S. Standard Sieve) to at least 700 DEG C. and preferably below 1300 DEG C. in the presence of water. An inert gas, such as nitrogen, argon, or neon, containing water vapour may be used as a carrier gas. The process is preferably continued for at least 5 minutes, and preferably for 30 minutes to 2 hours, until 0,2 to 5 weight per cent of water based on the barium oxide is adsorbed. The barium oxide may be agitated by effecting the process in a rotary kiln, or in a fluidized or extended bed. If a fluidized or extended bed is employed the fluidizing gas may comprise an inert gas containing water vapour. The resulting barium oxide composition may be used to produce barium detergents (see Group IV(b)). Specifications 759,765, 759,766, 759,821, 836,797 and 845,122 are referred to.ALSO:Barium oxide is treated with methanol to produce a barium methylate solution which may be treated with a sulphonic acid for example benzene sulphonic acid to produce a barium detergent. In an example 15 grams of barium oxide is treated with 100 millilitres of methanol at 30 DEG to 40 DEG C., and the solution is filtered at 30 DEG to 40 DEG C. The preparation of the barium oxide is described in Group III. Specifications 759,765, 759,766, 759,821, 836,797 and 845,122 are referred to. |
