PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To fix a position of a retainer bushing which slidably supports a rack bar without the need of high machining accuracy, in a rack and pinion steering apparatus. SOLUTION: A rack retainer 11 retaining the rack bar 10 is provided at the back of the rack bar 10 engaging with a pinion shaft 2, and the retainer bushing 12 slidably supporting the rack bar 10 is also provided at the upper surface of the rack retainer 11. A support hole 26 is provided around the center of a groove 25 of the rack retainer 11, and at the same time an opening window 30 is provided at a connecting portion 29 of the retainer bushing 12. A pair of two engaging pieces 31 is provided at both ends of the opening window 30 in the longitudinal direction, and then these two engaging pieces 31 are engaged with the support hole 26.
