PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a mode setting method for suitably setting a mode that specifies the operation of a printer, and to provide the printer. SOLUTION: The mode setting method for setting the mode that specifies the operation of the printer 1 comprises: an acquiring step in which an acquiring section 51 acquires a mode to be set in the printer 1 from a host computer 50; a determining step in which a determining section 52 determines whether or not the acquired mode is stored in a flash ROM 54 of the printer 1 and whether or not the acquired mode is a mode applicable to the printer 1; and a setting step in which a setting section 53 sets the acquired mode in the printer 1 as a setting mode for specifying the operation of the printer 1, if the acquired mode is the applicable mode.
