PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus capable of attracting user's interest without allowing the user to feel a sense of boredom, blank or the like during scanning without adding exclusive and expensive components. SOLUTION: Window parts are continuously or intermittently formed on the upper surface edge part or side face part of an outer package for holding a transparent original plate and storing a linear light source or on the upper surface edge part of a press cover along a sub-scanning direction in which the linear light source is moved to emit light guided from the linear light source to the window parts from the window parts to the outside. In the image reading apparatus for reading out a transmitted original, the window parts for emitting light guided from the inside of a transmitted light illumination unit by an optical system to the outside are formed on the upper surface part of the outer package of the transmitted light illumination unit, or part or the whole of the outer package of the transmitted light illumination unit is formed by a light transmissive resin material to transmit light from the light source arranged in the inside and emit the transmitted light to the outside.
