PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide the operating method of a membrane treatment apparatus by which occurrence of minute membrane breakage of a pinhole degree can be detected. SOLUTION: A membrane breakage detecting device 50 is connected with the treated water exit nozzle 12a of a hollow fiber membrane module 1. In a membrane breakage detecting process, compressed gas is supplied inside a hollow fiber membrane 4. Part of air bubbles leaked out of a minute breakage part 4a stick to the outer surface of the hollow fiber membrane 4 and residual parts remain at a dead end part 12A. After this process, raw water is supplied into the hollow fiber membrane 4. Treated water flowing out of the outer surface of the hollow fiber membrane 4 separates the air bubbles stuck to the outer surface. Part of separated air bubbles move to the membrane breakage detecting device 50 by being carried on the flow of the treated water and are detected. The residual parts of the air bubbles fill the inside of the dead end part 12A and overflow and move to the membrane breakage detecting device 50 and are detected thereby.
